Frankly speaking, putting the records up on display is perhaps the only way we love to 'store' them. Of course, it'll be difficult to keep them all on a wall-mounted showcase. In such cases, keep only a handful of records on the showcase and store the others in labeled boxes.
Purchase a few wicker baskets from a local store, and grab a handful of nails and a hammer for the project. Pick a spot to hang the baskets in place, and load them up with CDs and DVDs. You can even label the baskets with paper tags depending on what the baskets contain. Group the items together by category-wise or alphabetically so that it's easy for you to find the items later on.
If you have a shelving/cubby unit with unused storage space, you can use it to your advantage. Instead of letting the discs remain scattered all over the place, place them in wicker baskets or plastic crates. Label the boxes properly, and place them in the cubby unit. Now, if you have limited storage space, invest in a vertical cubby unit with lots of shelves.
